On mange bien.

Staying on Matavai Hopping some islands on the way to Matavai in the most Northern part of the Toamotu Archipel one arrives in the afternoon and is welcomed at the airport in the well-known Polynesian style. A short and relaxed drive brings you to AriiHeeVai pension, a lodge which consists of individual bungalows. The Pension has a wonderful setup with the common area in the center. Contrary to Tahiti there are no roosters crowing, no traffic noise, no machinery sounds and no jets skis. Quietness pure. The tourist industry is at its most basic form as only few visitors find their way to Matavai. A local little shop is only fifty meters from AriiHeeVai Lodge and provides for a selection of essential products, drinks included. As everything needed for daily live are transported by cargo ships the local community of some two hundred people are highly dependent on this sea link. Concerning entertainment excursions are provided daily, either by four-wheel or by boat and they include traditional meals and drinks. Most roads are following the shear endless forests of coconut trees on what was once the caldeira of a vulcano. Boat tours of course cross the lagoon in a labyrinth- like pattern as the waters are sometimes very shallow. Fish, a further source of food is available in abundance and caught often in traps. As the pass handles incoming and outgoing water between lagoon and ocean there is often a current which attracts certain species of fish more than others. Though mainly a local Tuamuto dialect is spoken obviously French is the second language. Younger people speak a few words of English as well. Mataiva is unique because of its fantastic colours and its friendly people. A sustainable economy based on exporting copra all year round at fixed prices forms a solid base of revenues for the families living there. Inviting you to go there and visit this place for yourself, let it find your positive appreciation and experience too!
